How do I pick a roofer in Florida?

Melissa Russell • Nov 01, 2023

There are over 6000 roofing companies in Florida and here are a few tips on how to choose the right one.

There are a lot of options when it comes to roofers in Florida and it can be a little overwhelming picking the right one. You may have heard horror stories on the news about out of state roofers coming to town after a storm or even a accident on the job and they didn't have the proper insurance coverage. Here are a few tips to help you narrow down your search.

1) Ask if the roofing company is licensed and insured.

This helps protect you in case of damaged or an accident that involves an injury.

2) How long have they been in business?

Experience matters and can help avoid mistakes during the installation process.  Mistakes could result in leaks and damage to your property.   Also, roofing companies that have proven track records tend to have more accurate estimates and unwanted surprises. They are also more likely to still be in business in 5 years if you do have a leak.

3) Check their certifications, accreditations & awards.

Many quality roofing products have great warranties if the product is installed correctly. Brands like Owens Corning or GAF offer certifications for their installers. Like GAF Certified Weather Stopper Installer or an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred contractor. You can also check online accreditations like BBB or Local community awards.

4) Do they offer a warranty?

Ask about the warranties offered for the roof you want to have installed. Warranties can vary greatly based on the manufacturer covering the product & the roofer covering the installation.

5)Ask for a written estimate.

Written estimate are a great way to compare apples to apples. It also lets you see the variants from contractor to contractor. If you get multiple estimates and one is very low or very high compared to the others then something might be off.

7) Ask about their clean up process.

Most quality roofing contractors have a process for clean up after the job is complete. Debris and nails left on ground can cause hazards for kids and pets. Also, how are they transporting the dumpster? Ask about effects on landscaping or hardscapes and what their process is to avoid damages.
